A new ranking from travel website TripAdvisor of the best countries to visit in the world lists Jamaica, a country that has a rich culture and history, and Nigeria, a place where tourists can find exotic places and people to spend time with.
Nigeria also has a long history of piracy, which is one of the reasons why it’s one of only three countries in the Americas that has not ratified the United Nations Convention against Torture.
“We’ve been very lucky to have such a rich heritage and a very tolerant society, but it’s still a crime to be a tourist in Nigeria,” says Michael Pye, the executive director of the TripAdvisors’ Africa division.
Nigeria’s tourism industry has seen a big jump in recent years.
Between 2007 and 2017, the country experienced a total of more than $1.2 billion in direct foreign direct investment (FDI), according to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation in International Relations.
In the past decade, the Nigerian tourism industry grew to $2.7 billion, according to Tourism Nigeria.
But that’s just a drop in the ocean of the country’s booming economy.
“The country’s population of around 25 million is growing, and it has the potential to become a world-class destination for tourism,” Pye says.
Nigeria has seen its tourism industry grow in the past five years, as the number of foreign visitors to the country increased from 2.8 million in 2016 to 3.1 million in 2017.
According to a recent report by the International Organisation for Migration, the number is set to grow to 6.2 million by 2026.
It’s also the biggest single source of income for the Nigerian government, which receives a lot of its income from the tourism industry.
Tourism Nigeria is a travel agency that has offices in all 50 states and territories, including the US, Australia, Canada, the UK, Mexico, and South Africa.
It has more than 10,000 staff worldwide.
“Our job is to provide people with a place to stay, and that includes everything from restaurants and hotels to accommodation and tour operators,” Poe says.
“If they want to go to one of these places, we can provide a place for them to stay.”
