The Australian capital has long been a popular destination for foreign visitors, with Melbourne the most popular city in the country, with its nightlife and nightlife culture and a thriving nightlife scene, including the now famous CBD nightclubs.
However, the city is now also attracting a huge number of Australians, mainly from China, and the tourism industry in Australia is struggling to cope.
While it’s not uncommon for a major international tourist destination to have its own economic boom, many of the top-end attractions in Australia have struggled to keep up.
“For me, Melbourne is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Australia, and I’m lucky enough to be a part of it,” said Sydney resident Amanda.
“I’m a bit surprised that it’s been so hard to get in there because it’s such a great city, it’s really a beautiful city, the nightlife is great, the culture is fantastic, there are so many different places to go and so many people to meet.”
But not all Australians have such a strong connection to the city, with a number of people saying that Sydney’s economy has been negatively affected by China.
“The Chinese economy has become a little bit like an economic tsunami in Sydney,” said Mr Darryl.
“It’s a really big wave that’s coming, and it’s very hard to predict the future.”
They’ve got to be very careful because the people are very well-educated and the economy’s very good.
“But I do think they’re going to be here for a while.
It’s a little too early to say.”
But there are signs that China’s influence is growing.
While Chinese tourists accounted for just 4 per cent of the global tourist arrivals in 2016, they accounted for more than 20 per cent in Australia in 2019.
And it’s the Chinese, not Australians, who are the biggest customers for the city’s bars, nightclubs, and cafes, according to the Australian Institute of Sport.
“As we’re looking at tourism, we’re really concerned about the economic impact,” said Professor Stephen Kavanagh from the Australian Sports University.
“There are so much Chinese people coming to Australia that the Chinese have to work and they’re really dependent on Australia.”
“And they have to be paid very well in Australia.
So I think the Chinese are going to come, and we’re going out of business.”
Australia’s economic woes come as the Australian economy is facing its worst downturn in years, with the country’s GDP down by almost 5 per cent.
In March this year, Australia’s Treasurer, Scott Morrison, declared a $1.3 billion “stimulus” package for the country to deal with the recession, but it was cut by $1 billion in March.
And despite the huge cost of the economic shock, Australian tourism has been growing.
In the last financial year, Australian travel spent $2.6 billion, with more than a quarter of that coming from China.
However the financial situation has only worsened in the last two years, as China’s economy slows and the Australian dollar has lost its value.
“You’ve got this huge economic shock to the economy, and a lot of people are looking for jobs,” Professor Kavanah said.
“And we have an export sector that’s going to have to absorb that shock, and so people who were previously spending overseas are now spending overseas, and there’s no longer an Australian presence there, so that’s a big blow to the local economy.”
But I think in terms of tourism, the Chinese still come here, and if you look at what is happening in China, they’ve got a lot to be thankful for.””
China’s economy is going to continue to grow, and in the short-term, we’ll continue to see more people coming in to Melbourne, but that’s not going to last for very long.
